A PDF can hold text and a rectangle as separate objects. Placing the rectangle above the text changes appearance without necessarily removing what is underneath. A recipient may still search, copy or extract the covered value.
The same warning applies to highlights, white boxes and cropping used as a substitute for redaction.
Understand layers and objects
PDF pages are assembled from drawing commands, fonts and images. Visual stacking does not prove that an earlier object has been deleted.
Use a dedicated redaction workflow
Mark the complete region, apply the redaction and create a flattened output designed to prevent simple object recovery. Keep the editable working copy restricted.
- Never distribute the preview as the final result.
- Check scans and selectable text separately.
- Remove sensitive metadata and attachments.
Test the adversarial path
Search the exact value, drag-select across the covered region and paste into plain text. If any sensitive content returns, the document is not ready to share.
